Health Protection Agency confirms no danger posed by IBAA in Gerrards Cross

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has endorsed the findings of Dr. Bernard Acton who concluded that the use of Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate (IBAA) in Gerrards Cross is “legal and fit for purpose”. In an independent response to Dr. Acton commissioned by South Bucks District Council, the HPA has stated that the stockpiles of IBAA at the site “do not currently represent a dust problem”.

The response also states that due to the large size of the particles, it would not expect these to be able to enter the lungs. The HPA stressed the need for good working practices and thorough sharing of information between all parties as the project progresses.

Commenting on the conclusions of the HPA’s response, Michael Kissman, Tesco Corporate Affairs Manager said: “We applaud South Bucks District Council for showing due diligence in asking for an independent review of Dr. Acton’s report and are pleased that the robustness of this report has been recognised.

“Going forward, it is vital that we continue to ensure that IBAA on the site poses no threat to the residents of Gerrards Cross and in order to achieve this Costain will continue to liaise with South Bucks District Council to implement a continuous monitoring strategy. Once construction starts, Costain will employ best practice to ensure that dust production is both minimised and managed in accordance with the dust management strategy proposed by Dr Acton”.
