TESCO ANNOUNCES INTENTION TO COMPLETE GERRARDS CROSS STORE

Tesco today announced its intention to resume building a supermarket in Gerrards Cross, following the submission to Network Rail of a new conceptual design for the rail tunnel on top of which the new Tesco store will be built.

A Tesco spokesperson commented: “We are pleased that a safe and workable solution has now been developed that will enable us to complete the development of a new Tesco supermarket at Gerrards Cross. This will bring greater shopping choice, increased car parking and more jobs to the area. We would like to unreservedly apologise for the time this decision has taken and for the disruption which has been caused to the local community since the collapse. Local people will of course have many questions about today’s news and we remain committed to keeping them up to date on the latest developments. We encourage them to visit our new website for more information and we will be holding a public meeting for Gerrards Cross residents shortly.”

The design of the revised structure of the tunnel has been produced by a new team appointed by Tesco last year to oversee the development. Led by international engineering and construction group Costain and engineering consultants Scott Wilson, the team has produced a revised concept for the tunnel design. The new conceptual design will require technical approval from the appropriate organisations.

The revised structure design is based on a reinforced concrete arch constructed over the top of the existing pre-cast units and is substantially more robust than other solutions which have been reviewed. The new arch will take the main structural load but the original segmental arches will remain in place.

A Tesco spokesperson added: “Since the tunnel collapse we have been working hard to find a solution but it has taken far longer than we originally hoped to get to this point. We sincerely apologise for the uncertainty that the delay has created for the local community and rail travellers.”

“The recommendations of our new contractor and structural engineers are being reviewed carefully by Network Rail at this time. Network Rail will also maintain a presence on site when the development is underway.”

The safety of passengers using the railway is of paramount importance, Network Rail and their technical advisors are playing a key role in reviewing the new plans for the tunnel structure. However, construction will not recommence until Tesco, Network Rail and third party checkers are satisfied that the detailed solution is a safe and workable one.
