TESCO RECEIVES AGREEMENT FROM NETWORK RAIL FOR NEW TUNNEL DESIGN AT GERRARDS CROSS
Tesco announced today that Network Rail has agreed in principle to a new conceptual design for the rail tunnel in Gerrards Cross on which the new Tesco supermarket will be built.
Known as ‘Form A Approval in Principle’, this is the first in a series of approvals that will be required from Network Rail as work progresses. The design of the revised tunnel structure has been produced by a new team that was appointed by Tesco last year to oversee the development. The team is led by international engineering and construction group Costain and design consultants Scott Wilson.
Tesco spokesperson Michael Kissman commented: “We are pleased that Network Rail has agreed in principle to the new design concept developed by our team. This is a significant step in the rigorous approvals process. During the next few months we will be working closely with Network Rail to agree the detailed design of the tunnel. Network Rail will also maintain a presence on site when the development is underway.”
Substantially more robust than other solutions which have been reviewed, the revised structure design is based on a reinforced concrete arch constructed over the top of the existing pre-cast units. The new arch will take the main structural load but the original segmental arches will remain in place.
The Tesco spokesperson continued: “We will continue to keep the community fully informed of the latest developments. Our new website www.tescogerrardscross.co.uk can be accessed by local residents who want to find out more about the project or send us their comments.”
