TESCO HOLDS PUBLIC MEETING WITH RESIDENTS OF GERRARDS CROSS

Tesco and its development partners met more than 200 local residents on 4th July 2007 to answer questions about the project to develop a supermarket above the railway line in Gerrards Cross. Further details were also provided of their intention to resume construction on the site.

Malcolm Brummer, Tesco’s Property Governance Director, apologised unreservedly for the distress and inconvenience caused by the tunnel collapse. He explained how the development team of contractors Costain and engineering consultants Scott Wilson have investigated thoroughly a range of design options and identified the safest, most robust way to progress the project.

The panel, including Tesco Corporate Affairs Manager Michael Kissman, Costain Operations Director Mike Sawyer and Scott Wilson’s Director of Structures John Tubman then responded to a number of questions from the audience. Issues raised included the use of IBAA on the site, the length of time that it would take to complete the store, and the management of traffic in the area. Tesco’s responses can be found on the Frequently Asked Questions page of this website: www.tescogerrardscross.co.uk/faqs.html.

Speaking after the meeting, Michael Kissman commented: “This was an invaluable opportunity for us to listen to the community’s concerns at first hand. Many people have understandably strong feelings about this project and we did our very best to address their concerns. We were able to update residents on the project and the actions that we are taking to make sure that construction proceeds in a timely manner with minimum disruption and maximum attention to safety.”

Mike Sawyer of Costain said: “Costain and Scott Wilson are organisations with extensive international experience and were brought onto the project after the tunnel collapsed. We appreciate the concerns of people in Gerrards Cross and are totally committed to ensuring that the new design and construction method are absolutely safe for both residents and rail passengers.”

Further information on the new designs for the tunnel is contained in the, what happens now section of the website - www.tescogerrardscross.co.uk/whathappensnow.html.
