Tesco delighted with approval to import fill material by rail.

Tesco today welcomed the decision of Bucks County Council to approve their Haul route application to import fill material to the Gerrards Cross site by rail, ensuring that hundreds of lorry movements will no longer be necessary and material can be imported in the most efficient and environmentally friendly way.

The approval means that instead of importing the additional fill material required to complete the project by lorries on the local highway network, Tesco and their contractors, Costain can now use the existing railway siding to import the large amount of fill material required. It has long been the desire of Tesco to import the material by rail, a method agreed in the original planning consent, ensuring that site traffic was kept to a minimum.

The decision taken by the council this week will be welcomed by the local community and ultimately the approval will also lead to the reinstatement of the railway siding, improvements to, and an increase in the number of the spaces at, the station car park.

Michael Kissman, Corporate Affairs Manager for Tesco said:
“This is an important approval, that whilst not critical to the completion of the scheme, will certainly make a huge difference in terms of local disruption caused by lorry movements and also in the timeline for completing the store.

“Tesco are pleased that the council came to this decision, whilst the application always had merit, members were clearly influenced by the continued and good progress that is being made on site and which we were able to report to them. This brings the whole construction process a step closer to completion.”
